Waurika Lake is on the old Chisholm Trail, among the most famous of cattle trails connecting the ranches of Texas to the rail shipping points at the cow towns of Kansas.

Waurika provides excellent fishing and hunting opportunities.  Principal species of fish include channel, flathead and bullhead catfish, largemouth bass, crappie and sunfish.  The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife manages 10,387 acres of land and water for fishing & hunting.  Principal hunting targets are whitetail deer, quail, dove, rabbit, wild turkey and numerous waterfowl.
