Hugo Lake is named after the town of Hugo, which was originally named for Victor Hugo, the French author.

The lake has 5,000 acres of accessible, uncleared area for fishermen to enjoy.  A wide variety of fish species can be found including largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, white bass, channel & flathead catfish, bluegill, buffalo, carp and drum.

The Hugo Public Hunting Area covers 18,196 acres of land and water for wildlife conservation.  Although there are some restricted areas, nearly all project lands are open to hunting.  Principal wildlife here are waterfowl, deer, bobwhite quail, dove, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, opossum, fox, mink and beaver.
